The Farm at Son Felip

Regenerating land. Preserving heritage. Producing with integrity.

Son Felip and Algaiarens comprise a 1,000-hectare agricultural estate located in the northern landscape of Menorca, between the protected beaches of Algaiarens and Cala Pilar.

The farm operates under regenerative agriculture principles, integrating olive groves, native livestock, pollinators and crop systems into one coordinated land management strategy.

Soil health is the foundation of the project. Through holistic grazing management, keyline design and permaculture-based planning, the estate focuses on improving soil structure, increasing biodiversity and enhancing long-term ecological resilience while maintaining productive agricultural output.

The objective is clear: to demonstrate that ecological restoration and high-quality food production can coexist within a working Mediterranean landscape.

Olive Groves

Rooted in Menorca’s heritage

The estate is home to more than 5,000 olive trees, including Arbequina and Koroneiki varieties, alongside historic centenary ones. Among them stands a rare millenary olive tree of the indigenous “De La Terra” variety, unique to Menorca and part of the island’s agricultural heritage.

Our olive groves are managed using keyline design, cover crops and other regenerative practices that improve soil structure, retain water and increase biodiversity. These methods strengthen the land’s resilience while enhancing the quality of the fruit.

We harvest the olives early, while still green, in order to produce exceptional extra virgin olive oil. This approach yields less quantity but significantly higher flavour intensity, polyphenol content (antioxidants). The result is an oil that reflects both the vitality of the soil and the precision of our farming practices.

Son Felip participated in the creation of the Oli de Menorca association, which founded the first 100% organic IGP in Europe.

Native Menorcan Cattle

Grazing as a tool for regeneration

Approximately 150 head of native Menorcan cattle (Raça Vermella Menorquina) move across the estate through a carefully managed rotational grazing system. This approach mimics the natural movement patterns of wild herbivores — short, concentrated grazing periods followed by long rest cycles for the land.

By moving the herd strategically, we stimulate plant growth, deepen root systems and improve soil structure while naturally fertilising the ground and accelerating nutrient cycles.

At certain times of the year, the cattle are guided into woodland areas to reduce excess biomass, helping lower fuel load and contributing to wildfire prevention in this Mediterranean landscape.

The Menorcan breed is highly resilient and well adapted to the island’s climate, requiring fewer external inputs than non-native breeds. Raised on pasture and integrated into the regenerative system, they produce exceptional quality meat that reflects the integrity of the land.

Bees & Polination

Supporting biodiversity across the estate

Around 100 beehives are carefully relocated across different areas of the farm to optimise pollination and strengthen ecological balance across the estate.

A key species within our regenerative system is French Honeysuckle (Hedysarum coronarium). Beyond its striking red bloom, this deep-rooted legume plays an essential role in soil restoration. As a nitrogen-fixing plant, it improves soil fertility naturally while its root structure helps increase organic matter and store carbon deeper in the ground. It protects the soil surface, supports microbial life and contributes directly to long-term carbon sequestration.

When in bloom, French Honeysuckle becomes a major nectar source for our bees, producing a distinctive, aromatic honey highly regarded for its purity and complexity. Our honey was awarded a Platinum Medal at the London Honey Awards, reflecting both the quality of the ecosystem and the integrity of our beekeeping practices.

Here, pollination, soil regeneration and food production are part of the same living cycle.

Bio-intensive garden

Small scale, seasonal and lots of favor

Our bio-intensive garden reflects a focused, human-scale approach to food production. Seasonal vegetables are grown organically and harvested daily for the house and selected local restaurants in Menorca.

Today, the garden allows us to supply nearly the entirety of the vegetables served at the Son Felip house, reinforcing our commitment to proximity, freshness and soil health.

Rather than maximising volume, we prioritise diversity, flavour and long-term fertility. Careful crop rotation, composting and minimal soil disturbance ensure continuous regeneration of the soil.

It is here that guests experience the most immediate expression of the land — fresh, seasonal produce grown within walking distance of the table.

A diversified and resilient system

Biodiversity as strength

Resilience comes from diversity. Alongside olive groves, cattle and bees, the estate integrates additional species that strengthen ecological balance.

Mobile hen coops rotate across the land, naturally fertilising the soil while producing eggs available locally at Sa Cooperativa del Camp in Ciutadella. Sheep and pigs contribute to landscape management and nutrient cycling, supporting a self-regulating agricultural system.

We also cultivate ancient Xeixa wheat, a traditional Mediterranean grain valued for its nutritional quality and deep cultural roots. Reviving ancestral varieties strengthens biodiversity and reconnects agriculture with its historical foundations.

Our Menorcan horses form part of this living ecosystem as well, contributing to land stewardship while preserving one of the island’s most emblematic native breeds.

By integrating multiple species and crops, the estate reduces dependency on external inputs and builds long-term ecological resilience in the face of climate uncertainty.
